FAMED TRANSPAC LONG BEACH-HAWAII YACHT RACE ACTIVITIES KICK OFF JUNE 26

Contact: Lynn Fitzpatrick, (619) 252-8632 or
Kevin Wilkerson, (310) 545-8701

Fifty entries from seven nations will be setting sail from the shores of Long Beach June 29-July 5 in the famed Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac), a grueling, 2,255-nautical-mile race to Hawaii that traces its beginnings back to 1906.

The entries include: Ragtime, owned by Newport Beach’s Chris Welch, which will be extending its record number of Transpac Races to 15; Alfa Romeo, skippered by New Zealand’s Neville Crichton; Pyewacket, owned by Roy P. Disney of Newport Beach and America’s Privateer Lynx, a tall ship.

The public is encouraged to visit Transpac Village (located in Rainbow Harbor adjacent to Gladstone’s) beginning June 26 until July 5 to view the fleet and participate in activities. Thursday evening, July 2, features a view a FREE showing of the Disney film “Morning Light” filmed at the 2007 Transpac.

From Rainbow Harbor, staging point for the Transpac fleet, the yachts will start off Point Fermin, the best spectator viewing point, with the start of the 45th Biennial event staggered to allow slower boats to reach Hawaii about the same time as the larger, faster boats. Group 1 will start on Mon., June 29, Group 2 on Thurs., July 2 and the final group on Sun., July 5. The official sendoff from Rainbow Harbor will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 1 p.m. each time.

The race course will then take competitors through cold, wet northeastern Pacific waters, through doldrums, squalls and scorching heat, then to the blustery tradewinds of the Molokai Channel near the finish line off Oahu’s Diamond Head.

For the third time, Transpac is part of the Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival, a series of three-month events on and around the waters and beaches of Long Beach. As host city, Long Beach is providing a ceremonial launch and pre-race activities at the Transpac Pier in Rainbow Harbor, where the public can meet the sailors and tour the Lynx. For further information, and to follow the progress of the race, visit www.transpacRace.com.
